About
After taking his first gather of hot glass in 2001, Julian worked with glass throughout the Northeast USA and Sweden. Julian attributes his glass education to William Gudenrath, from whom he learned the fundamentals of Venetian glassmaking technique; and to Susanne Jøker Johnsen, who introduced Julian to the Scandinavian glass aesthetic and social history.
Julian was teaching assistant to William Gudenrath at the Studio of the Corning Museum of Glass, and assisted Maestro Gianni Toso during his visit to the Corning Museum in 2011. Julian has also studied with Michiko Sakano, Martin Rosol, and the late Jiří Harcuba.
It was during his classes with Susanne that Julian was introduced to Scandinavian glassblowing technique, and the rich history of Swedish glass that inspired him to begin his exploration of Swedish art history & design outside the glass studio. Julian received a Fulbright Scholarship to pursue his study of glass art and economics in Sweden under the guidance of Gunnel Holmér, Senior Curator at the Swedish Glass Museum. Julian’s final report was presented to the Swedish government commission for the economic development of the glass region in 2012.
While in Sweden, Julian apprenticed at the Bergdala Glass Factory deep in the woods of Glasriket (the “Crystal Kingdom”), and visited glass studios and factories throughout Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Germany, the Czech Republic, and Italy.
Julian received his bachelor of arts degree with high honors from Brandeis University and holds a master’s degree from Columbia University. Julian was born and raised in New York City, where he currently lives and works.
